Elevated fire risk has prompted county officials to issue burn restrictions for unincorporated areas of Spokane County effective Wednesday, July 24, according to a press release.
Unauthorized open burning and specified outdoor recreational fires — campfires, fire bowls and fire pits — are prohibited in unincorporated areas of Spokane County until further notice.
Citizens may still use manufactured portable outdoor fireplaces, barbecues, outdoor fireplaces, patio and deck warmers – if the appliance is equipped with a spark arrestor and a chimney. In addition, only approved fuels including seasoned (clean and dry) firewood, briquettes, natural or propane gas.
Persons found open burning are subject to a misdemeanor, a fine of up to $1,000 and 90-days in jail.
“Burn restrictions are an important function for keeping our County safe during the dry summer months,” Spokane County Building and Planning Director John Pederson said. “These restrictions are taken seriously and are initiated in consultation with local fire districts.”
Burn bans are also in effect for the West Plains cities of Cheney, Medical Lake and Airway Heights, and within Spokane County Fire Districts 3 and 10.
