Cheney Public School’s director of student support services, Robin Andrus, will be leaving the district and school officials have hired Franklin Day to fill the position going forward, the district announced on Tuesday.
Andrus has served in her current position for one year and was the assistant director of student support services prior to that, according to Assistant to the Superintendent Helen Page. Andrus has accepted a job at another district as a school psychologist.
The district posted the job opening on June 17 and closed the post June 30, Page said. District leaders conducted interviews during the first part of July, she said, with their last interview taking place July 11.
New hire Day earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology at Eastern Washington University; his education specialist degree from University of Nevada Las Vegas; and his administrative certificate from Washington State University, according to a press release.
Day has been serving the students of Spokane Public Schools since 2013, currently as an associate director of special education. Prior to his employment with Spokane Public Schools, he served in the Mead School District for nine years starting as a school psychologist and exiting as the co-director of special services.
According to the release, “Mr. Day’s letters of recommendation provided great insight into his dedication to students and staff.” One letter said Day “has a thorough knowledge base of special education policy and law and he continually works to keep up to date with changes, while another stated, “His knowledge, skillful application and awareness of systems is unparalleled.”
Day will officially take over as director of student support services with Cheney Public Schools in August.
