Two former Cheney and Medical Lake athletes received league and team awards as members of the Wenatchee Valley College fastpitch softball team after the recently concluded season.
Former Lady Blackhawk Rachel Barsness was named to the Northwest Athletic Conference Eastern Region’s All-Star first-team as a catcher. Head coach Laurel Wyatt said the Knights freshman was also voted most valuable player by her teammates.
Barsness led WVC in hitting with a .432 overall average, .462 for the NVAC season. She played in all 38 games for the Knights, had 60 hits in 139 at bats – including four home runs – with 38 runs batted in and 39 runs scored. She struck out just 11 times and had an on-base percentage of .459.
In the field, Barsness posted a .955 fielding percentage with just seven errors.
Also named to the 2019 NWAC Eastern Region All-Stars was former Medical Lake High School player Glori Cheevers. Cheevers played her freshman and sophomore season for the Lady Cardinals before moving to Athol, Idaho where she finished out her career.
Cheevers was named to the Eastern Region’s second-team as infielder. The sophomore also played in all 38 games, hit .397 with 46 hits in 116 at bats, four home runs, 33 RBIs and 40 runs. In the field she posted a .830 fielding percentage.
Both Barsness and Cheevers were members of the West Plains Bandits club softball team during their high school careers.
Wenatchee Valley College went 22-16 in NWAC play in 2019, 21-11 in the conference. A pre-season pick to finish near the bottom of the region, the Knights finished fourth and made the NWAC playoffs where the lost to Douglas and Mt. Hood colleges in play at Spokane’s Dwight Merkel softball complex, May 18.
