Summerhawks fall to Mead, Ferris

Cheney’s AA baseball team dropped a pair of games in American Legion play this past week. The Summerhawks came up on the short end of a 19-9 slugfest June 22 at Mead, and couldn’t find a hole in Ferris’s defense in a 4-0 loss to the Saxons June 24.

Cheney managed 14 hits against what Mike Constantine called “good pitching” at Mead, but only four hits against “mediocre” pitching at home against Ferris. The Summerhawks got singles from Justin Ward, Eli Cabot (two hits) and Tate Heuschkel.

“It was just one of those days,” Constantine said of Ferris.

At Mead, the Summerhawks were led at the plate by Karl Barsness, Jake Harmon and Ward. Barsness was 3 for 4, including a solo home run in the fourth inning, while Harmon was 3 for 3 and Ward 2 for 3 — all singles.

Cheney pretty much matched runs with Mead through the first three innings, trailing 6-4 when the home team put up eight runs in the bottom of the third to blow things open. Cheney scored in the fourth off Barsness’s home run, and added four more runs in the fifth but couldn’t overcome Mead’s lead, which shortened the game to five innings.

The Summerhawks drop to 4-8 in American Legion play so far this season, but Constantine remains upbeat and is impressed with his team’s resilience and desire to learn and have fun. Cheney is young, with six sophomores and the rest eighth-graders moving into high school next year, along with one seventh-grader.

“These kids are very, very coachable,” Constantine added.

Cheney faced Ferris in a rematch in Spokane on Tuesday, and is off until July 1 when they host Colville in a doubleheader. The Summerhawks travel to Chewelah July 2 and are off until a July 9 game at Rogers.
