Cheney High School’s interim head wrestling coach has been appointed to the position full-time, athletic director Jeff Chandler told the Cheney Free Press last week.
Just before the 2018-2019 school year started up, former head coach Brad Rasmussen stepped down for personal reasons.
“It was late when Brad decided he couldn’t continue for the season,” Chandler said. “I gave him the year — it wasn’t a leave of absence but that’s kind of what I considered it.”
Assistant coach Jason Connor “worked with Brad to build up the program,” Chandler said, and coached the Blackhawks through last season on an interim basis.
The team flourished under Connor’s leadership, taking the league championship for the first time in three decades and sending several wrestlers to state. Connor received the Great Northern League’s Coach of the Year award, while Cheney assistant wrestling coach Jared Lacambra was awarded Assistant Coach of the Year.
Going forward, Connor will be Cheney’s fulltime head wrestling coach. As of press time he could not be reached for comment.
“Jason had done just a great job and we wanted to keep him,” Chandler said. “He has a great relationship with the kids and they’ve got a great program going on.”
