Cheney School District sponsors federal summer food program

The Cheney School District announced this week the sponsorship of the Simplified Summer Food Program for Children. Meals will be made available at no extra charge to attending children 18 years of age and younger.

One of the things that sets the Cheney district apart is its full roster of culinary professionals behind the lunch counter. Almost all school lunch workers have specific culinary training or are in the midst of some sort of related schooling, Cheney director of nutrition service L.J. Klinkenberg said.

A recent lunch at Cheney Middle School saw students chowing down on Thai curry and Caesar salad, with plenty of peppers, spinach and watermelon radishes.

Meals will be served at Cheney Middle School and Westwood Middle School June 24 – July 26. Monday through Friday at Cheney Middle School, breakfast will be served 7:30 – 8:30 a.m., lunch will be served 11:30 – 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Westwood Middle School, breakfast will be served 8– 9 a.m., lunch will be served noon – 1 p.m. Both locations will be closed July 4-5.
