After finishing fourth in the Great Northern League, the Cheney High School boys tennis team headed to Washington State University for districts May 10-11, winning some and losing some against West Valley and Pullman.
“The team gave great efforts at districts,” head coach Jesse Erickson said in an email. “I thought everyone played really well and showed just how much they improved over the course of the season.”
In singles play, Jared Adams played what Erickson called “some of his best tennis of the season” in a marathon 1-6, 4-6, 3-6 match against Pullman’s Connor Lee.
After a lackluster first set, All-League honoree Logan Ray pulled off a comeback, winning 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 against West Valley’s David Worthington, before losing to West Valley’s Spencer Jones.
In doubles play, Jameson Powell and Ben Beamer lost to West Valley, while Austin Passey and Sam Laughton lost to Pullman.
Cheney’s Alex Rose and Trevor Stewart battled back for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory over West Valley’s Lance Steen and Rylen Simmons, but couldn’t quite hold that momentum, losing to West Valley team Bryson Cebriak and Logan Atkins.
Erickson said the up and down performances did not dampen his pride in his team.
“I am very proud of the effort and heart shown by this team at districts and all season long,” he said.
