Medical Lake High School JROTC receives award

The Medical Lake High School Washington 81st Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is scheduled to be awarded the Silver Star Community Service with Excellence Award at a ceremony tomorrow, Friday, May 17, at Medical Lake High School according to a unit press release.

The keynote speaker will be Brigadier Gen. Gratton O. Sealock (ret.).

The Silver Star Community with Excellence Award is given to JROTC members for attaining a high level of community service and organization. Throughout the year, the Washington’s 81st participated in a variety of events including cleanup of the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Cemetery, cross country meets, estate sales, and assisting at the 2019 Bloomsday race.

Cadets also cleaned churches and cleaned up after sporting events in the school gym, all while exhibiting a positive attitude and service mindset, the press release said.

To receive this award, each cadet is required to have 45 hours of documented community service. Washington’s 81st averaged 48 hours of community service per cadet. Many cadets had distinguished honors, with 21 students putting in 45 hours or more within the 2018-2019 school year.

A total of 2,385 hours of documented community service hours are required to receive the Silver Star Community Service with Excellence Award. Medical Lake’s JROTC logged 2,564 for the year.

Community service is a cornerstone of being a social servant and improving the lives and environment where one lives, according to the press release.

JROTC headquarters at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala, issues the award.
