Cardinals sweep Riverside to conclude NEA track and field

Medical Lake’s track and field teams wrapped up Northeast A League season competition on a high note last week. The Cardinal boys and girls easily knocked off visiting Riverside, with the boys winning 75-62 and the girls topping the Rams 86-50.

Head coach Gene Blankenship said his team set 30 new personal records in the competition, 15 each for the boys and girls.

“I was extremely pleased with the kids performances,” Blankenship said in an email. “We actually had three kids break into the top-10 list.”

Those athletes were Nicholas Henry, who won the 3,200-meter run with a new PR of 10 minutes, 7.8 seconds; Mayah Eberhardt who won the 100 and Sophie Salinas-Sanders, who set a PR of 16 feet, 7.25 inches for first in the long jump.

Pedro Sandre notched a pair of first-place finishes for the boys, capturing the 100 with a PR of 11.19 and the long jump with a mark of 18-10. Grant Greenhall was first in the 200 in 24.22 and second in the 100 with a PR of 11.70, Connor Palmen was first in the 800 in 2:09.15 on the track with Angel Mendez second in the 1,600 and Quintin Collins second in the 3,200 behind Henry — leading a contingent of Medical Lake runners that finished 1-7 in the event.

The 4x100 relay team of Greenhall, Alex Stith, Mitchell Hale and Sandre was first in a time of 45.17.

Colton Ellis finished first in the discus with a toss of 119-10, and was second in the shot put. Ezekiel Lewis set a PR of 39-07 for first in the triple jump, finishing second in the long and high jumps. Kelton Earl won the pole vault in 11-00, while Sebastian Cochran was second in the javelin.

Stith was third in the long jump while Logan Luszcz, Andrew Kysar, Brandon Giles and Mitchell Hale finished 2-5 in the triple jump, the first three all setting new PRs.

The Cardinal girls were just as dominating as their male teammates. Besides the 100, Eberhardt also set a PR of 1:03.60 for first in the 200, with Ellie Acord second in a PR of 1:07.49.

Allison Payne and Maris Tuck went 1-2 in the 1,600, with Tuck setting a season-best of 6:52.07. Payne’s time of 19:49.55 was good for first in the 3,200, with Tuck and Katie Hiatt going 2-3.

Amblessed Okemybo established PRs in both hurdle events, winning the 100 in a time of 19.74 and finishing second in the 300 in 57.98. The freshman also set a PR of 81-02 for first in the discus, with Emma Keister and Laci Sica setting season-best marks of 75 feet and 72-08 for second and third.
