You win some, you lose some, and the Cardinal boys tennis club managed one of each in regular season play, bringing their Northeast A League record to 1-6 in league play and 1-7 overall for a sixth-place position.
The Cards won but a single match when they faced the Riverside Rams across the net on Tuesday, April 23.
The Kenady brothers, Brad and Kurtis, were the only victors for the Cards, taking both sets 6-1, 6-1.
Calling it a fun match to watch, boy’s head coach Brian Tellez said, “their singles experience from their last couple of matches carried over into their doubles play, resulting in powerful cross-court shots and control of the match.”
R.J. Puckett and Johan Lindsey lost the only other doubles match 1-6, 0-6.
In singles play, Ethan Brown lost in two sets 2-6, 2-6, and Celeb Snow went down 0-6, 0-6.
The Card boys again traveled on Thursday, April 25, this time to Deer Park where they scored the season’s only win thus far in the nearly finished season with a 3-2 team victory, their first of the season.
Snow earned a strong 7-5, 6-1 win in singles play, as did Brown with a 6-2, 6-1 domination.
Tellez said that Snow took time to reflect between sets to apply a new strategy for the second to secure a match win, while Browns “athleticism and determination kept his opponent from securing easy points.
In doubles play, the Kenady brothers were again the victors with a 6-2 first set and a squeaker 7-5 second set. Tellez felt the team had lost focus after a fast first set and it showed. Calling it an important lesson, Tellez noted that the brothers, “corrected with enough time to finalize the match and take the win.”
The Puckett-Lindsey doubles team lost in two close sets 6-7, 4-6, and Aidan Niblock had to forfeit for lack of a second player, giving the Stags an easy win.
As of press time the Medical Lake schedule showed the boys had Medical Lake hosting Lakeside (2-4, 2-4) today.
