Cardinals rout Newport in NEA track and field

The Medical Lake High School track and field teams had little trouble with Newport in the team’s third Northeast A League meet of the season. The Cardinal boys downed the visitors 104-26 while the girls dispatched their counterparts 121-11 on a sun-drenched day in Medical Lake.

“We had many PRs (personal records); 27 boys PR’d and 18 girls,” head coach Gene Blankenship said in an email. “We had several athletes win more than one event.”

Jaxyn Farmen led that category. The senior hit the trifecta of field events, winning the javelin with a season-best toss of 105 feet, 4 inches, the long jump with a season-best leap of 17-04 and the triple jump in 35-10.75.

She had help from a number of teammates. Paige Headrick was first in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 50.13 seconds and won the pole vault with a vault of 7 feet even.

Amblessed Okemybo won both hurdle events, setting a PR in the 100 with a time of 20.72. She also set a PR of 79-07 for first in the discus.

Sophie Salinas-Sander set a new PR of 12.95 to win the 100-meter dash, AJ Spivey captured the 200 and Mayah Eberhardt established her second PR of the day for first in the 400. Earlier she was second in the 100 in 13.04.

Allison Payne won the 1,600 and was second in the 3,200 behind teammate Maris Tuck. In her first race of the season, the sophomore set a season-best time of 15:40.50 in the distance event.

Emma Keister’s PR of 31-04 was good for first in the shot put, and Ellie Acord’s PR of 4-09 gave her first in the high jump. Medical Lake’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams each finished first.

Pedro Sandre, Colton Ellis and Quintin Collins notched first-place finishes for the boys. Sandre captured the 100 in 11.67 and was first in the long jump at 19-01, Ellis won the shot put with a heave of 43-8.50 and the discus with a throw of 121-00 while Collins set a PR of 4:46.87 to win the 1,600 and was first in the 3,200 in 10:35.60.

Alex Stith set a PR of 24.57 for first in the 200, Grant Greenhall was first in the 400 with a season-best 57.97 and Nicholas Henry took first in the 800 in 2:12.67. Sebastian Cochran won the javelin, Andrew Kysar was first in the high jump and Kelton Earl was first in the pole vault. Mitchell Hale’s PR of 34-11 was good for second in the triple jump.

Both relay teams, the 4x100 and the 4x400, were first.

Blankenship split the Cardinals up on Saturday, sending 25 to endure cold and windy conditions at the Undeberg Invitational in Ritzville and another 20 across the Cascade Mountains to the Shoreline Invitational north of Seattle.

Five Medical Lake athletes set new PRs in Ritzville — Kyler Castro (800), Vincent Long (1,600), Anthony Armstrong (discus), Mia Thompson (400) and Shaylee Withrow (javelin). The only top 10 performances came from Katie Hiatt, sixth in the pole vault, and the 4x100 team of Ethan Stockton, Brandon Giles, Preseton Dyess and Brady Hester who took ninth.

At Shoreline the Cardinals notched six PRs — Sandre (100), Henry (1,600), Angel Mendez (1,600), Collins (3,200), Ellis (discus) and Payne (1,600). Payne’s time of 5:51.20 was good for 13th, while Henry’s 4:33.59 earned him eighth.

“This was a highly competitive meet,” Blankenship said. The Medical Lake boys finished 44th out of 54 scoring teams while the girls didn’t score.

The Cardinals have one more meet before district competition May 10-11, playing host to Riverside on Wednesday, May 1.
