Airway Heights Corrections Center employees recognized

Five employees working at the Airway Heights Corrections Center on the West Plains were honored for exemplary performance at the state Department of Corrections annual agency awards on Friday, April 26.

A total of 162 employees out of 1,050 across the state were nominated by their colleagues and received awards, according to a Department of Corrections (DOC) press release. Those honored from Airway Heights included sex offender treatment specialist Andrea Apaa, who received the “Equitable and Inclusive Workplace” award for her contributions to equity and diversity, and Nathan Blum, who was recognized as the DOC Correctional Officer of the Year.

Airway Heights Corrections Center classification counselor Benjamin Frier and associate superintendent Frank Rivera both received “Outstanding Performer” awards intended for employees who “consistently exhibit superior job performance,” while corrections officer Robert Mackey received an award for innovation meant to honor those who “think outside the box” according to the release.

The Airway Heights facility, located 10 miles west of Spokane, houses 2,258 minimum, medium and close-level security male inmates.

Seven other corrections employees working at community field offices and community justice centers throughout the county were also recognized.
