Cheney’s track and field teams ran their Great Northern League marks to 2-0 with a pair of victories last week. The Blackhawk boys easily downed hosts East Valley 95-45 while the girls also experienced little trouble in knocking off the Knights 81-59 last Wednesday, April 17.
The boys finished first in eight of nine events on the track, beginning with Jaheem Peele winning both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, the former in 11.53 seconds and the latter with a new personal record of 23.65. Bryden Esquibel and Eli Eagan set new PRs of 12.31 each to tie for second in the 100, while Parker Rogers was second in the 200.
Julian Torres won the 800 with a time of 2:07.47, with Aiden McCrum third. Beckett Schoenleber was first in the 1,600 in 4:57.95 with JT Gasper second while Garrett Roettger and Cameron Wilkes went 2-3 in the 400, with Wilkes setting a PR of 57.68.
Gasper turned around and set a PR of 10:53.71 for first in the 3,200, with Andres Margraf third. Sean Allen’s PR of 17.53 was good for first in the 110 hurdles, with Cole Williams third in a PR of 19.48. Tucker Cunningham won the 300 hurdles in 44.91.
Cheney’s 4x400 team of Dylan Thornburg, Cameron Teresi, Finnegan Syrie and Zeyle Cambell-Timentwa was first in 2:07.31.
The boys also won five of seven field events. Mekhai Goodloe was first in the shot put with a PR of 47 feet, 6 inches while Jacob McGourin captured the discus with a mark of 168-06 and Ryan Riekmann was first in the javelin with a toss of 159-02.
Parker Rogers and Dawson West set new best marks to go 1-2 in the high jump, with Parker winning with a PR of 5-10 and West second with a season-best of 5-10. Parker took first on fewest misses.
Jeremy Blom, Skyler Hanson and Cameron Villalobos went 1-2-3 in the pole vault, with Blom’s PR of 11 feet good for first and Hanson’s 10 foot PR good for second. Hyum McCombie was third in the shot put and third in the discus with a PR of 121-03 while Alex Long set a PR of 136-02 for third in the javelin. Jacob McIlquham’s PR of 20-01 was good for second in the long jump.
While shutout of the points in the 100 and 200, the Cheney girls controlled every other track event with at least two placers in the top three, winning nine of 11 events.
Jaela Thornburg and Megan Habegger went 1-2 in the 400, setting season-best marks of 1:05.69 and 1:07.71 respectively. Alexia Batchelor, Jade Gere and Jenna Mansfield went 1-2-4 in the 800, with Batchelor first in a season-best of 2:40.28, Gere second with a PR of 2:41.20 and Mansfield third.
Gere captured first in the 1,600 with a time of 6:03.15, with Mayah Spakousky third. Kaitren Fisher won both the 100 and 300 hurdles with times of 18.38 and 52.06, with Hannah Davis third in the 300 in a season-best 18.62.
Marion Mager-Reeser and Ryliegh Bowes went 2-3 in the 3,200. All three Cheney relay teams won their respective events.
Hunter Holsten won the shot put with toss of 36 feet, 6 inches with Malea Farrell second with a PR of 35-04. Abigail Scott took first in the javelin with a mark of 92-05, with Hope Schnieder second and Madisyn Duilio’s PR of 85-04 good for third. Scott also PRd in the discus for second, getting off a throw of 93-05 while Farrell was third.
Sophia Van Wormer’s PR of 12-01 was good for first in the pole vault, with Makayla Miller second. Emma Pepperd won the long jump with a leap of 15-6.50, with Alexxis Bowes second with a PR of 13-08. Bowes was third in the triple jump with a PR of 28-00.50.
Cheney also competed in the Mooberry Relays last Saturday at Rogers High School in Spokane, the boys finishing tied with Lewis and Clark for sixth and the girls tying Asotin for eighth.
For the girls, Van Wormer was first in the pole vault while Holsten and Farrell went 4-5 in the shot put. Warren was sixth in the 100 with a PR of 13.35 for the highest individual finish on the track, while the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams both finished fifth.
For the boys, Peele was fourth in the 100 with a PR of 11.39. McGourin won the discus, Riekmann was second in the javelin while Goodloe and McCombie went 4-5 in the shot put.
