Card track and field compete at league meet in Colville, Mooberrys

Medical Lake’s boys track and field team split its second Northeast A League meet last Thursday while the girls went down to defeat twice.

The Cardinal boys edged host Colville 67-65 while being edged in turn by Deer Park, 70-69. The girls lost 90-58 to the host Indians while falling 72-55 to the Stags.

Head coach Gene Blankenship said the boys set 24 new personal records at the meet with the girls establishing 15. Two Cardinals also broke into the school’s top-10 list, both coming in the pole vault with Kelton Earl’s 12-foot vault landing him fourth on the list and Sarah Firestone’s 6-6 vault tying her for eighth all-time.

Nicholas Henry led Medical Lake in the track events. The senior set a new PR of 2 minutes, 8.97 seconds to win the 800-meter run and was first in the 1,600 in 4:51.35.

Jeremiah Windle took first in the 3,200 with a time of 11:12.04. Connor Palmen an Quintin Collins went 2-3 in the 800, with Collins taking third in the 1,600. Victor Long was second in the 3,200 while Grant Greenhall finished third in the 100.

The Cardinals’ 4x100 relay team was second while the 4x400 team finished third.

Colton Ellis and Ezekiel Lewis carried Medical Lake in the field events. Ellis took first in the shot put with a toss of 43-10.50 and captured the discus with a PR heave of 121-3.50.

Lewis won the high jump with a leap of 5-08, and was third in the long and triple jumps, setting a PR of 38-4.75 in the latter. Earl’s vault put him third in that event.

Jaxyn Farmen continued to provide the scoring punch for the Cardinal girls. The senior won all three of her events, setting a new season record of 99-07 in the javelin and winning the long jump in 16-02 and the triple jump in 36-6.50.

Ellie Acord was second in the triple jump with a PR of 31-1.5 and finished third in the high jump. Emma Keister was third in the shot put.

Sophie Salinas-Sanders and Mayah Eberhardt paced Medical Lake on the track. Salinas-Sanders finished first in the 100-meter dash with a PR of 13:13 seconds while Eberhardt was right behind her in second with a PR of 13:25.

Allison Payne was third in the 3,200 meters, with the 4x200 team finishing second.

The Cardinals competed Saturday in the annual Mooberry Relays at Rogers High School in Spokane. The boys finished 15th overall with nine points while the girls were 22nd with three points.

Pedro Sandre led the boys, medalling in the long jump and the 100-meter dash, taking first in the former with a PR of 21-4.5 and finishing eighth in the latter with a time of 11.62. The distance medley team of Henry, Windle, Palmen and Collins finished fifth, running legs of 1,200, 800, 400 and 1,600 meters in 11:12.38.

Blankenship also noted that the sprint medley team’s 12th-place finish and the distance medley team’s 15th-place put them both in the school’s all-time top-10 list. The sprint team was composed of Joanna Gaudet, Mia Thompson, Eberhardt and Paige Headrick while the distance team was made up of Payne, Katie Hiatt, Thompson and Maris Tuck.

“This is the best finish we’ve had at the Mooberrys since 2011,” Blankenship said in an email.
