Cheney High School graduate Rylie Pease set a Princeton University javelin record as the Tigers began their 2019 outdoor season at the University of North Florida on March 20.
According to a news release, Pease, a sophomore, set the school record on her sixth attempt, turning in a toss of 157 feet, 6 inches. The mark is seven feet, three inches farther than the previous record of 150-03 set by Missy Hake in 1991, and is the seventh best throw in Ivy League history.
It also places her 10th in the nation, and is nearly 10 feet farther than her previous best of 148-4 in 2018. Pease led the throwers the entire meet after a 149-8 on her first attempt, and had throws of 145-9, 140-7 and 140-4 before her best throw.
Blackhawk alum Eli Mason placed fifth nationally in the 197-pound class for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University/Prescott, Ariz. at the NAIA national wrestling championships held in Des Moines, Iowa, March 2-3, helping the Eagles, who were undefeated in the regular season, to an 11th-place team finish. According to a news release, Mason has now wrestled well enough in the last two years to be named an All-American in consecutive seasons and will leave Riddle as one of the most successful 197s ever.
The two-time 2A Washington state champion transferred to Embry Riddle after receiving an associates degree from Highline Community College. He redshirted his first season, 2016-2017, but went 16-12 overall his junior season in 2017-2018, finishing seventh at nationals.
In his final campaign in 2018-2019, Mason was 27-8 overall, 12-1 in dual match competition and 15-7 in tournaments. He also earned Embry Riddle honor roll status.
Finally, 2015 CHS graduate Kendyl Cone wrapped up a dual college career playing soccer and basketball at Warner Pacific University. Cone played two seasons at Clark College, averaging 10.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, earning an NWAC Academic Achievement award before transferring to the Portland, Ore. Knights.
At Warner Pacific, Cone averaged 21 minutes and 6.1 points per game her junior year in 2017-2018. In her senior campaign, she averaged 20 minutes and 7.1 points per game, scoring a season high 16 points against Oregon Tech on Dec. 30.
Cone also played two years of soccer for the Knights as a midfielder.
