The new Airway Heights recreation center will soon be open for business, with city workers gearing up for its official grand opening in May.
A tentative date of May 1 has been set for a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the new facility, which has been under construction since November 2017, according to guest services and operations supervisor Addam Janke.
The long-awaited recreation complex, which cost around $17.26 million to complete, was originally slated to open at the end of 2018, but due to construction delays that deadline was later bumped to March and then to mid-April.
Back in January, Parks and Recreation officials estimated the facilities opening date to be the second week of April, but contract amendment documents indicated that the project might not be 100 percent complete until May.
A report that was provided to the Airway Heights City Council in December indicated that the project would be complete around May 2019.
The facility is set to include weight-lifting areas, a swimming pool complete with lazy river and a multi-purpose room for events with access to a full kitchen.
