Sean Dotson accepts superintendent position in Tumwater

At the Cheney School Board’s March 13 meeting, Superintendent Rob Roettger announced the departure of Assistant Superintendent Sean Dotson, who has accepted a superintendent position with the Tumwater district on the west side of the state.

Roettger said that on Feb. 28 the Tumwater School District board of directors unanimously selected Dotson for the position. He will officially begin his duties July 1, but may spend some time in the district prior to that start date.

“It sounds silly to say, but I’m proud of you,” Roettger told Dotson. “I know this is something you’ve been working toward a long time.”

Dotson recently earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Washington State University. He said that though leaving his current position is bittersweet, his children will soon be pursuing higher education in Western Washington, making it a good time to relocate.

Dotson told Tumwater district officials that the area “stood out as a community with a rich history of quality schools that benefit from outstanding community support. These are important qualities in a successful school district and are some of the qualities that make it seem a great fit.”

The district hopes to begin interviewing for a new assistant superintendent by mid-April.
