Letter to the Editor
I am deeply discouraged by the news regarding several county sheriffs and county commissioners, among others, arbitrarily deciding that Initiative 1639 is unconstitutional therefore they are not upholding it as a law.
Are these same individuals, who are supposedly sworn to uphold the law, now giving permission to all citizens to break any law they want if they don’t like it. Sounds like anarchy!
The law has been voted on by a majority of voters wanting to improve the safety of citizens against gun violence? I voted yes for Initiative 1639 because I want the escalating gun violence to be mitigated. I am fed up with whining gun fanatics chanting the Second Amendment.
I support sane gun ownership that includes thorough back ground checks, gun safety education and safe storage of guns. For me, assault weapons are for war zones and there is no age that can justify having assault weapons in non war zones.
Isn’t it the job of the justice system to determine constitutionality of a law?
