Cheney schools boundary review stalls

The Cheney School District did not present attendance boundary recommendations to the school board at their Feb. 13 meeting as originally planned, school officials said Tuesday.

Instead, they will be working to revise the current recommendations and will likely hold one more public meeting to get local feedback on those revisions.

Assistant Superintendent Sean Dotson said that following some concerns from families, the district will be reworking its plan and “trying to find an alternate path.”

The concerns stemmed mainly from families living near Snowdon Elementary School — sometimes as close as two miles — who under the original plan would be required to bus their children several miles into Cheney.

After hearing clearly that this was an issue for several families, the boundary review committee understood their concern, Dotson said.

“We are going to develop a revised set of boundaries and see if we can accomplish what we need to without significantly increasing that bus time,” Dotson said.

At the moment, the plan is to present recommendations to the board at its Feb. 27 meeting.

Superintendent Rob Roettger will announce the date of the next public boundary review meeting soon, Dotson said.
