Cheney High School’s boys and girls basketball teams split their hookup with visiting East Valley in Great Northern League action last Tuesday. The Blackhawks powered to an 81-42 win while the Lady Blackhawks fell behind early and couldn’t get back in a 77-58 setback to the Knights.
The Cheney boys opened a 22-13 first quarter lead and never looked back, building the margin at the end of each additional eight-minute frame. The Blackhawks had some balanced scoring, led by Devin Cook’s game-high 22 points, with Nick Berman adding 14 and Thomas Baycroft 13.
The Lady Blackhawks experienced the reverse, falling behind 22-8 after one quarter of play. Cheney rebounded in the second to pull within 11 at half, 37-26, but faded in the final 16 minutes to the 2A second-ranked Knights.
Shelby Draper led Cheney with 13 points, with Maggie Smith adding 12 and Haley Pemberton 11.
The Blackhawks move to 3-3 overall, 2-1 in the GNL, while the Lady Blackhawks fall to 1-5, 0-3. The boys are third in league standings behind West Valley (2-1, 5-2) while the girls are fourth, tied with Pullman (0-3, 2-6).
Both teams were at home Friday night in non-league action against Shadle Park, results next week due to the holiday publication schedule. The Cheney boys have one game over the holiday break, Dec. 28 at Mount Spokane, and open 2019 with their next-to-last non-league game at Idaho 5A Lake City.
The Cheney girls will spend next week at the Eagle Holiday Classic at West Valley High School, taking on Newport on Dec. 27 and another opponent Dec. 29. The Lady Blackhawks also travel to Lake City, Jan. 2.
