The road did not prove to be friendly to the Cheney High School boys basketball team last week as the Blackhawks dropped a pair of games away from the friendly confines of home.
Cheney struggled to find offense, especially late in the game, in a 52-41 non-league loss Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Post Falls. The Trojans of Idaho’s 5A Inland Empire league outscored the Blackhawks 14-8 in the final quarter to put away what was a close game to that point.
Kaiden Custer was Cheney’s only player reaching double-digit scoring, tossing in 11 points as the Blackhawks managed just 14 shots to Post Falls’ 19, and were just 50 percent from the foul line. Alex Horing and Gavven Desjarlais each scored 16 for the Trojans, who were 11 for 18 from the line, just over 61 percent.
Friday at West Valley, the Blackhawks couldn’t withstand the Eagles offensive blitz in the second and third quarters. West Valley outscored Cheney 47-26 in those 16 minutes en route to a 74-47 Great Northern League rout of the visitors from the West Plains.
Gonzaga Prep-transfer Nick Drynan led a four Eagles in double-figure scoring with 29 points, including five 3-pointers. Jake Berman was Cheney’s only player in double digits with 18 points.
Cheney drops to 1-1 in GNL action, 2-3 overall. The Blackhawks wrap up their pre-Christmas break schedule with a pair of home contests — Tuesday night against league foe East Valley (0-3, 2-6) and Friday against Greater Spokane League Shadle Park (5-1).
The Knights are led in scoring by Tyrell Brown, who averages just over 12 per game. The Highlanders are led by the scoring tandem of Jake Groves (17.16 ppg) and DeMarius Brown (15.33 ppg).
