Airway Heights mobile home fire requires full response

The Airway Heights Fire Department may have been escorting Santa Clause around the city over the weekend, but that didn’t stop them from focusing on their primary duties and taking a break from spreading Christmas cheer to address a structure fire that required the response of multiple local agencies.

A single-wide mobile home in Vietzke Village on Craig Road caught fire early Sunday evening, resulting in flames that reached high into the sky, igniting a nearby tree and several small explosions that investigators believe were due to propane tanks.

Airway Heights training chief Alex Turner was in command on-scene and said the source of the fire is still under investigation.

“It was an interesting coincidence because (Vietzke Village) was our next stop on the Santa run and we were already on our way out there,” Turner said.

According to reports, the flames were ignited on the porch, but by the time firefighters responded the home was fully involved. The only injury reported as a result of the fire were slight burns on the hands of the owner of the home, but he and his dog were both able to exit the structure safely.

Firefighters from Airway Heights working in conjunction with Spokane County Fire District 10, the Fairchild Air Force Base Fire Department and the Medical Lake Fire Department were able to contain the blaze to one mobile home. The homeowner’s vehicle was lost to the fire and minor damage was caused to a neighbor’s vehicle.
