The Cheney School District has begun its boundary review process, creating an online survey for parents and community members to weigh in on the adjustment of school boundaries.
According to education officials, the review will help the district balance school sizes and manage its escalating enrollment. The district’s population topped out at 4,832 students as of the beginning of this month, up 288 kids from the final count of the 2017-2018 school year.
Enrollment has spiked throughout the district but is particularly high at the elementary and middle school levels, and those boundaries will be examined most carefully in the upcoming review.
The online survey, sometimes called “Thoughtexchange” in reference to its hosting website, will allow parents and concerned community members to give feedback on the process. The survey asks questions like, “What are some important perspectives to take into account as we revise school boundaries?”
“This is their opportunity to share their thoughts and perspectives,” assistant to the superintendent Helen Page said.
The survey also shows users what other parents feel are important considerations for the review process. As of press time, the number one concern of survey takers was that returning students be able to remain at their original school.
The discussion can be found at https://my.thoughtexchange.com/#511593810. The link to the survey is also included in the district’s November newsletter. The survey will be available until Nov. 16.
Any questions about this process or the survey website should be directed to the district office at (509) 559-4502.
