The Lady Blackhawks varsity volleyball team is done for the season after a solid performance, eliminating Clarkston on Oct. 25 but losing to East Valley two days later in the Great Northern League semifinal.
The team delivered against Clarkston, coming out on top in four sets (25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 25-16) and playing a focused game. Junior Shelby Draper had 14 kills, ensuring a Lady Blackhawk victory.
“Clarkston was awesome, my girls played amazing,” head coach Heather Zorrozua said. “I don’t really feel like Clarkston stood a chance, because everyone was firing on all cylinders.”
Having just one practice between that game and semifinals was tough on the team, Zorrozua said.
The Lady Blackhawks went into their Oct. 27 match against a team they’ve battled fiercely all season. The match with East Valley was intense from the start, a pause mid-game lasting nearly five minutes while East Valley coach Chad Coupland battled a call, culminating in an East Valley player hurling a volleyball into the bleachers.
“There’s another layer to playing East Valley, and that’s that our girls can get distracted because the other team tends to play a little emotional, and that shocks our girls sometimes,” Zorrozua said.
East Valley eventually eliminated Cheney 3-1, coming out on top of a 25-21 score in the fourth set.
“Our girls were super composed and that’s good for me to see as a coach,” Zorrozua said. “The game is bigger than just the scoreboard.”
The Lady Blackhawks’ season may have wrapped, but Zorrozua said she is proud of her team and all they’ve accomplished.
“It ended bittersweet because we’re done, but they represented themselves and Cheney so well,” Zorrozua said. “They deserve to walk out with their heads held high.”
