An Airway Heights resident was sentenced to 95 months in federal prison followed by a lifetime of court supervision for possession of child pornography.

The Cheney-Spokane chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute sponsored an informative and scenic hike through the lower Palouse Canyon, discussing the history of the region.

Sacramento State kicked Eastern Washington University out of the playoff chase with a 15-13 win in the Eagles’ 82nd annual Homecoming Game at Woodward Field.

Nov. 6, 1998

Cheney High School’s outdoor smoking parlor faced closure pending an upcoming City Council vote. The city stood to add two state laws to the city’s municipal code that allowed police to cite 16- and 17-year-olds for smoking in public.

Medical Lake High School science teacher Steve Caldwell promised to cut his long locks into a crewcut if the school’s sophomore class could raise at least $1,500 for a local cancer support group. They raised $2,000, and Caldwell buzzed off hair that took more than three years to grow.

A local man gathered a petition from Cheney residents who wanted the city to alleviate a $300,000 hole left by axing the interfund tax by cutting that amount from the city budget.

Oct. 27, 1988

Two large signs were placed at each end of Cheney, proclaiming the city a supporter of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program.

A youth basketball clinic for kids aged 10-12 was hosted at the Salnave Elementary School gymnasium.

The Cheney Centennial Committee finalized plans for an official kick-off event for a year’s worth of activities commemorating the state’s 100th anniversary.

Nov. 2, 1978

Despite pouring rain, more than 300 runners completed the 4-mile Great Pumpkin Run in downtown Cheney.

Fairchild Air Force Base’s 92nd Bomb Wing won an award for their countermeasure matrix activity during the “Giant Voice Competition” missions.

Cheney officials broke ground on the 60-bed Cheney Care Center nursing home across from Cheney High School.

50 Years Ago

Nov. 7, 1968

The highlight of the annual Spokane County Association of Wheat Growers was the “Wheat Queen Contest” in which four wheat farmers’ daughters competed for the title.

Icy roads caused an 11-car pileup at the Four Lakes interchange, leading to considerable vehicle damage but no serious injuries.

The Spokane Bookmobile began serving the Four Lakes area on a trial basis.
