Cheney volleyball conquers West Valley in GNL match

Despite an illness affecting multiple players, the Lady Blackhawk’s volleyball team came out on top in their Sept. 18 league match against West Valley, winning 3-1 in four sets.

Juniors Shelby Draper and Riley Potter made a standout team yet again, Draper with 16 kills and Potter with 33 assists. Sophomore Avery Stark also came through with 22 digs and six kills, while Madison Duilio had four aces and 19 digs.

Head coach Heather Zorrozua was very satisfied with their performance, she said.

“We saw a lot of great things, and some high numbers in terms of our stats,” she said.

Draper also boosted the squad’s low block statistics, delivering six blocks — a far cry from the team’s usual two or three.

The Lady Blackhawks crushed the first two sets, scoring 25-15 and 25-17 wins in rapid succession. But moving some players around and trying a different rotation in the third set didn’t pay off, causing them to lose the third set 25-17. Fortunately, they were back in it in the fourth set, ensuring their victory 25-10.

“Moving around just wasn’t what the girls were used to and I think that threw us off,” Zorrozua said.

She plans to start switching up the offense in practice to get the players more comfortable with other rotations, she said.

The team’s upcoming game against East Valley offers a shot at redemption after they faced off on Sept. 6, with Cheney making a disappointing show and losing 3-1.

“We’re going to focus on playing smart and following strategies to keep (East Valley) off their guard.” Zorrozua said. “I’m excited to see wat the girls can do.”
