Medical Lake Fire Department officials found that the used fire engine purchased the previous February was missing too many equipment items to effectively fight fires.

Sept. 17, 1998

Due to poor steer sales in 1997, Medical Lake Future Farmers of America members showed and sold lambs and pigs at the Spokane Interstate Fair instead.

Cheney dove into the compost business, allocating $22,000 toward capital expenses for bagging its own EcoGreen product.

The Cheney High School football team opened up their 1998 season by dominating the Post Falls Trojans 23-8.

Sept. 15, 1988

The summer session of Eastern Washington University offered students the chance to write, produce and star in their own television dramas.

A report was released announcing that the suicide rate among teens and young adults had more than doubled since the previous generation and had become the second leading cause of death of people aged 15-24.

An under-21 club, LCQ1000, opened for business in Cheney to give kids a place to relax in a “non-adult” environment.

Sept. 14, 1978

Nearly 150 people gathered at Cheney’s City Hall to listen to a lively debate from local political candidates.

The Cheney Police arrested a local woman for attempted robbery after she tried to hold up a checker at Safeway with a knife.

Gov. Dixy Lee Ray proclaimed the week of Sept .18-25 as “Astronomy Week” in Washington, and Cheney mayor Tom Trulove quickly followed suit.

50 Years Ago

Sept. 12, 1968

Seven youths who pled guilty to damaging sprinklers in the park, breaking areas off cars and damaging a school bus were sentence to one year’s probation.

With 387 students, Medical Lake’s elementary school became so overcrowded that the health room had to be turned into a classroom.

Four new tires were stolen from the Shell service station in Cheney. Officials blamed the incident on “trickery.”
