Registration for kindergarteners and new elementary students in the Cheney School District began Monday, Aug. 13, at all local elementary schools.
Registering students before school starts is convenient for parents and for the school district, said Sharon Throop, assistant to the superintendent.
“It’s much better to be done in advance,” Throop said. “It also helps us know how many students to expect at each grade level, for planning purposes for classrooms. For example, if we get many more students than we were expecting for a certain grade level, we may need to open another classroom, and it [early registration] can help with that.”
To be eligible for registration, children must be age 5 by August 31.
Parents or guardians must bring the child’s birth certificate, immunization record, proof of residence such as an old utility bill and a valid photo ID of the parent or guardian registering the child.
Many of the necessary registration forms can be completed ahead of time by accessing them on the school board website.
Accessing the online forms can make life a lot easier for parents, Throop said.
“Parents can fill those out in advance and then they have just a couple that they fill out in person when they get to the school,” Throop said.
Immunization requirements for each grade level can also be found on the district’s website. Preschool registration will be taking place at the same time.
Middle school and high school students new to the district can call 559-4400 to make an appointment to register. Three Springs High School students should call the school at 559-4586 Aug. 20 or later for a registration appointment.
