Fireworks calls heat up in Medical Lake over Fourth

Police reports from Medical Lake back up Fire Chief Jason Mayfield’s quick overview of how the week of the Fourth of July went for crews..

“Following a couple slow Fourth’s we returned to our typical day,” Mayfield wrote in an email. “We ran seven calls, three were small grass fires, two of those were from folks that do not live in Medical Lake and came out to let off fireworks.”

Between July 2 and July 8, reports from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, which contracts with the city for law enforcement services, show five calls pertaining to fireworks.

Sale and lighting fireworks are illegal in most parts of the state of Washington. Locally, along with Medical Lake, both Airway Heights and Deer Park allow their sale and lighting.

“We had a great crew on all day and into the night who did a tremendous job answering all the calls and interacting with our citizens,” Mayfield added.
