From the archives: 1978 Dick Huber, a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, displays the VFW flag during a Memorial Day ceremony at Cheney's Fairview Cemetery. The program, held under stormy skies, was presented by the American Legion, VFW and Eastern Washington University ROTC. The program followed the traditional breakfast and memorial walk, sponsored by the Cheney Cemetery Association.

Medical Lake Club Scout Pack 307 and volunteers stayed busy with its annual plant sale fundraiser at Denny's Harvest Foods. Plants were provided by Airway Heights Royal Gardens.
With the holidays approaching, Medical Lake City Council members discussed stepping up public education efforts on current city ordinances explaining rules for discharging fireworks and where it was prohibited.
Northern Quest Casino started to limit casino access to guests 21 years and older. Previously, the minimum age to enter the casino was 18 years old.
The Cheney High School boys soccer team posted a 3-1 win in the quarterfinals against Grandview to advance them to the Final Four in the state tournament.

Drivers and pedestrians would have a more pleasant trip through Cheney on or along State Highway 904. The city was one of 11 statewide entities receiving Transportation Improvement Account (TIA) funding for its proposed SR-904 corridor enhancement. The TIA money, $743,375, was the biggest piece of the puzzle in the $1.2 million project.
The tumbleweed filled lot between Taco Bell and Betz Road was jammed with heavy machinery and scurrying builders as the first part of an expected major retail center was built.
At an assembly, students gave Melvie Strampe the Teacher of the Year award, fine arts instructor at Cheney High School. She was responsible for the "Empty Bowls" project among other things.

The local Masonic Lodge, holding its annual reception for outstanding members of the Cheney High junior class, selected Jason Clark and Heather Johnson for scholarships. Others honored were Vicky Lynch, Shirley Wang, Lylanya Smith, Bob Morgenstern and Jonna Uibel.
Eastern Washington University had two new administrators, university President Alexander Schilt announced. Keetjie Ramo accepted the interim appointment as vice president of student services and Jane Johnson was named vice president for university advancement.
It took four tough games, but the Medical Lake Lady Cardinals softball team qualified for the upcoming class A state tournament.

Richard Means of Fairchild Air Force Base's 92nd Supply Squadron was selected as the outstanding Supply Civilian in the U.S. Air Force for 1977.
Soo Shin, 14-year-old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Suk-Han Shin, was chosen to represent Cheney at the state music teacher's convention in Ellensburg as a result of her playing in the Cheney piano auditions.
Repaving, new sidewalks and curbing and new water transmission lines were all on the agenda for the First Street Project. It was a local improvement effort 100 percent financed by the federal Economic Development Administration.

About $2,000 worth of goods were stolen over the weekend in a pair of burglaries, one to the Western Auto store and another to a private Cheney residence.
Exercises for the last class to graduate from Amber School were held. Eighth-grade grads included Jo-Ellen Jordan, Dona Lewis, Shirley Hartley, Pamela Sutherland and Terri Brandt.
Members of the Medical Lake Masonic Lodge laid the cornerstone for a new temple.
