Eastern Washington University police officials were not immediately available for comment on the recent open-carry incidents. University media relations Dave Meany provided an email that had been circulated to students, faculty and staff concerning the incidents.
“The university has received reports from members of the campus community that some people do not feel safe due to recent demonstrations near campus. These demonstrations have all taken place off of university property. Both the EWU and Cheney Police Departments are aware of the situation and have been in contact with the individual involved with these acts.
We wish to remind you that all weapons, including firearms, are prohibited on EWU property. EWU does not, however, have control over property owned by the City of Cheney or individual homeowners. People have a constitutional right to possess firearms off of EWU property.
We take seriously the safety of our students, faculty and staff. If you see anyone on EWU property with a weapon, immediately call 911. If you have a concern for your safety, please contact the EWU Police Department at 359-7676.”
