With the regular season winding down, the Cheney High School girls tennis team picked their first Great Northern League win in the last match with a 4-3 victory over West Valley on Monday, May 7. No individual scores were available as of press time.
Previously in the week, the Blackhawks had a 5-2 loss to Clarkston on May 1, followed by falling 7-0 to East Valley on May 3.
Against the Bantams, there was a win on both the doubles and single side. The No. 1 doubles that featured Nika Kauwe and Zab Potter won 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 3 singles spot, Sarianne Winters defeated Alex Grorom 6-3, 6-2 as well.
Other singles competition included Danica Gary at No. 1 (0-6, 0-6), Jazi Daily in No. 2 (0-6, 0-6) and Brayden York-Akiu in the No. 4 spot (4-6, 0-6).
In doubles, Abby Fillmore and Cassie McDaniel teamed up at No. 2 (2-6, 1-6) and Brooke White and Alysin Simons at No. 3 (0-6, 0-6).
At East Valley on May 3, two of the three doubles matches went into three sets. At No.1, Kauwe and Potter fell 4-6, 6-4, 3-6. In the No. 2 spot, Daily and Divinity Lomazzi fell 6-3, 5-7, 3-6. The other doubles team, McDaniel and Fillmore also lost 5-7, 2-6.
“There were a lot of close matches against East Valley,” head coach Courtney Webb said. “Nika and Zab played a long three set match and battled all the way through. They worked very well together and it was the most aggressive I have seen them play.”
In singles competition, Gary continued to play at No. 1 (0-6, 2-6) and Winters competed at No. 2 (3-6, 1-6). York-Akiu fell 0-6, 2-6 at No. 3 and Simons fell 6-7 1-6 at No. 4.
The Blackhawks finish the regular season at 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the GNL. Post-season begins this Friday, May 11, at Washington State University for districts at 9 a.m.
