If somebody needs an excuse to walk their dog, the fourth annual 5K-9 Fun Run/Walk in Airway Heights is a perfect reason to get your pet out of the house and enjoy the day.
The fun run and walk, sponsored by Ginnie O’s Dog and Cat Grooming, takes place on May 19 at 9 a.m. with check-in beginning at 8 a.m.
“We hope to see you all there making memories,” Ginnie O’s said.
There will be two routes to choose from, including a 1.5-mile walk or run and the official 5K route for the dogs that are able to go the extra distance. Both of the routes begin at Sunset Park.
“It is basically a community dog walk,” Andy Gardner, the parks, recreation and community services supervisor said. “We would like to keep aggressive dogs at home and no dogs in heat. If there is a chance of them being aggressive, they should stay at home.”
There is a limit of one dog per person allowed. If somebody has two dogs, they need to bring another person with them to include both pets. But canines are also not required to participate. People can come out to just enjoy the community walk as well.
After the race, there will be a dog play area along with a visiting session with other pets from SpokAnimal. There will also be a supply drive to help local shelters. The list of pet supplies that can be donated include cat and dog food, non-rawhide treats, peanut butter, puppy pads, plastic only dog and cat toys, beds, blankets, shampoo, brushes, crates and Frontline flea control.
Along with pet supplies, general cleaning tools will also be accepted. Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Petco and PetSmart gift cards is also another idea for a donation.
Registration costs $20 a person, which includes a race shirt and a bandana. The form can be filled out at http://www.cawh.org/5k9.
