Cheney soccer has tough week with close losses

With postseason competition on the horizon, the Cheney High School boys soccer team wrapped up the regular season last week with a 1-0 loss to West Valley on Tuesday, April 24, and a 2-1 loss to East Valley on Saturday, April 28.

Against West Valley, the Blackhawks weren't able to find the back of the net but the Eagles found it during the 13th minute of the game. The goal ended up being the only score of the game, giving West Valley the 1-0 win.

"The season has been hard on the team in terms of injuries and illnesses," head coach Rene Caro said. "We created some decent opportunities but had little to no luck in front of goal. West Valley did well and came in with a good plan that allowed them to score early and manage the rest of the game. We continue to be optimistic and build on the great bits and pieces that we showcase throughout a game."

Against East Valley, Deiby Bernandez scored within the first eight minutes for the Knights, taking an early 1-0 lead. During the second half, East Valley scored an own goal, tying the game at 1-1 for the Blackhawks.

At the end of regulation, the game was still tied at 1-1. In overtime, EV's Bernandez scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute, for the 2-1 win.

The Blackhawks finish the regular season with a 2-10 league record and 3-12 overall. Postseason begins today, May 3, at Clarkston in a loser-out first round of the GNL tournament.
