The Cheney High School girls tennis team took on Pullman last week on April 24, and fell 7-0 to the Greyhounds. This was the only match during the week as the Blackhawks also played at the Inland Empire tournament that took place at various locations in Spokane.
Against Pullman, Danica Gary competed in the top singles spot and lost 6-1 in both sets. Chloe Lerch played in the No. 2 spot and fell 6-2, 3-6 while Sarianne Winters played at No. 3 and lost 6-1, 6-2. Rounding off singles competition was Brayden York-Akiu at No. 4, falling 6-4, 7-6.
“Chloe Lerch played a very competitive match and had many long rallies,” head coach Courtney Webb said. “She adjusted well to the variety of shots she was given.”
In doubles, Nika Kauwe and Zab Potter teamed up at the top spot and fell 6-3, 6-1. Jazi Daily and Divinity Lomazzi competed at No. 2 and lost by a close 7-6, 7-5. Finishing off doubles, Abby Fillmore and Cassie McDaniel played at No. 3 and fell 6-1, 6-2.
“Jazi Daily and Divinity Lomazzi played a long, tough set,” Webb said. “Every game was close and the score continually went back and forth. They hustled and worked very well together.”
The Blackhawks played Clarkston on Tuesday, May 1, and continue GNL play at East Valley today, May 3. Cheney wraps up the regular season against West Valley on May 9 before traveling to Pullman on May 11-12 for the district tournament.
