Process to replace John Merrick begins

Candidates for open Medical Lake City Council seat have until close of business on May 25 to apply

The wheels are in motion on the process to fill the unexpired term of Medical Lake City Councilman John Merrick who resigned his Position 2 seat April 14 due to scheduling conflicts with a new job.

The eventual council appointee will hold the seat until the November 2019 general election, and then could run for a full term.

To begin the process, applicants must submit a letter of interest, resume and fill out a questionnaire, available at City Hall. The application process opened on April 26 and closes at 4 p.m. May 25.

The process is conducted under state law, specifically RCW 42.12.070 which states the present City Council has 90 days from the effective date of the resignation with which the fill the opening. The group hopes to complete the process earlier, perhaps within 60 days if all goes well.

Once the application process is closed, council may appoint an ad hoc committee of no more than three senior members to screen the candidates, interview and make a recommendation to the full council for a vote.

All finalists will be given the opportunity to make an on-the-record statement of their qualifications during a City Council meeting. With a majority vote of the council, all applicants may be given the opportunity to present their qualifications in the same public forum.

Other qualifications say applicants must not hold any other public office or be employed by the city of Medical Lake, be a registered voter and a city resident.

Applicants are reminded that any information submitted is public record.
