A nomination was made to place the building at 113 F St. on the registry of historical places under a special valuation. Constructed in 1925, the structure was then known as the Cheney Traveling Building and then was home to the Cheney Flooring business.

Washington State Trooper Ethan Wynecoop had to direct traffic on Washington Street as officers from four agencies responded to a car-bomb threat at Eastern Washington University, near the Phase building. The incident disrupted traffic from 1 – 3:45 p.m. while the area was cleared with the help of a bomb-sniffing dog.

Medical Lake's Pioneer Park was under fire with local citizens reporting after-hours activity and graffiti to city officials and local police.

April 30, 1998

A donation by the Cheney Tilicum Club helped beautify the grounds of the Cheney Care Center. The group's assistance added five arborvitaes and a dogwood tree.

Fishermen of all ages, shapes and sizes hit the area lakes to enjoy the hectic first day of the fishing season.

A pair of Cheney Blackhawk football stars, Romanus Chodorowski and Nick Reynolds, were both headed for collegiate programs. They were also set to compete with the best the state of Washington had to offer during the summer by being on the roster for the East-West Summer Classic football game.

April 28, 1988

Injuries were somehow kept to a minimum and no one was seriously hurt when a Cheney School District bus left the roadway north of town and flipped onto its top.

Determined not to give up without a fight, a Cheney neighborhood group decided to take legal action against the city in an attempt to have the City Council reverse a decision to add a fourth "leg" to the State Highway 904/Marshall Road Intersection.

By the margin of one point, the Medical Lake High School girls track team defeated their league opponent, the Chewelah Cougars on the Cougar track. The Cardinals took the win, 65-64.

April 27, 1978

Eastern Washington University's application for membership in the Big Sky Conference was not as formal as many believed it to be. EWU President Dr. H. George Frederickson said the request was not a binding commitment.

The entire population of the city of Cheney was invited to attend President Jimmy Carter's dedication of Riverfront Park in Spokane, said Cheney Mayor Tom Trulove.

50 Years Ago

April 26, 1968

Eastern Washington State College trustees opted to enter into a contract with Cheney Medical Associates for student health services. The CMA had options on five lots at Seventh and Elm, on which they proposed to build a $225,000 clinic.

Earl Hilton of Cheney was installed as the new state president of the state PTA at a convention in Spokane.

Eastern Washington State College's on-campus enrollment for spring quarter was 4,523, an increase of 16 students over fall quarter.
