Common advice says humans can't outrun a bear so don't even try.
Bears can outrun a human on any terrain, uphill or down, except last Wednesday when the Medical Lake Cardinals totally ran away from the Newport Grizzlies in a Northeast A League dual track meet. The ML boys won 116-20 while the girls had similar success with a 106-19 victory.
“They are really shorthanded,” Medical Lake head coach Gene Blankenship said. “We pretty much dominated."
Cardinal athletes set 22 personal records on the boys side and the girls had 21.
“Unfortunately, none of them came in the distance races which I’m responsible for,” Blankenship said. “I’m not having a great track season with my distance runners right now to be honest with you. Hopefully it comes around before the end of the season."
Pedro Sandre scored dual wins in the 100-meters (11.53 seconds) and 200-meters (24.14) for a pair of PRs. Medical Lake had the top-four finishes in each event.
While he did not PR, Mason Williams was a dual-event winner in the 800 (2 minutes, 10.54 seconds) and 1,600 (4:53.72) meter races. Colton Ellis also doubled-up and won in both the shot-put (40 feet, 4 inches) and discus (93-0).
Jaxyn Farmen paced the girls with three wins. She swept the long jump (15-08) and triple jump (34-05) plus tossing the javelin 98-06. Distance runner Maris Tuck claimed dual wins in the 1,600 (2:55.58) and 3,200 (14:06.93).
Lindsey Cargle’s 9-foot, 3-inch winning number on the pole vault broke her own record by six inches. And in what unfortunately would be her final meet, Journey Tueller finished second in the discus (80-11) and third in the shot (26-11).
The Cardinals’ Emma Keister won the shot with a 30-foot heave while Newport’s Tiara Hamberg scored one of the rare Grizzly wins on the day with her 83-03 toss of the discus.
Medical Lake was set to host its first home meet of the season when they entertained Deer Park and Lakeside on April 18.
