Area libraries celebrate 20 years of Día
Día turns 20 in 2018! El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), commonly known as Día, is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children and appreciating culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities, with activities culminating on April 30.
Among the common goals of all Día programming are to cconnect children to the world of learning through books, stories and libraries and to nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child’s home language and culture.
Spokane County Library District is celebrating with the program “Together with Día” that includes stories, crafts and activities from around the world. Several libraries will be taking part, and the public is invited to join in the fun.
On the West Plains, “Together with Dia” takes place at the Cheney library on Monday, April 30, from 2–4 p.m. It also takes place Tuesday, May 1, at the Airway Heights library from 3:30–5:30 p.m.
BetterInvesting holds public educational sessions
As part of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Money Smart Week 2018, BetterInvesting is inviting the public to general investing classes and to BetterInvesting model investment club sessions. Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign created by the Chicago Fed in 2002 to help consumers better manage their personal finances.
These events are free. The first takes place Saturday, April 21, from 1 – 3:30 p.m. at the Spokane County Library District’s Argonne branch at 4322 N. Argonne Road. Attendees will learn about investing by taking part in an active investment club. Both those new to investing and experienced investors are welcome.
The second event, “An Introduction to Stock Investing … How to Make Your Money Make Money” takes place Wednesday, April 25, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. This class introduces the principles of how to put money to work, what makes money grow and how to find some money to put to work. Suitable for any beginning investor, and especially valuable for younger potential investors.
BetterInvesting is a national nonprofit organization that has been empowering individual investors since 1951. According to a news release, the organization was founded in Detroit, the association (formerly known as National Association of Investors Corporation) was borne out of the conviction that anyone can become a successful long-term investor by following commonsense investing practices
Wildland Fire Protection Strategic Plan open houses
OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting the public to learn about the development of a Wildland Fire Protection Strategic Plan for Washington and provide input on wildfire concerns to inform the planning process.
An open house is scheduled for Monday, April 23, at the Spokane Opera house from 4-7 p.m., with registration required by April 19. Additionally, a workshop will be held Tuesday, April 24, at Spokane Valley’s Mirabeau Hotel & Convention Center, 1100 North Sullivan Road, from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
