It was announced that Cheney would hold its first annual Mayfest, featuring a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, live music and beer garden. Mayfest replaced Cheneyfest, which was a fall festival that started in 2006.

Carl Schwenn, an electrician for the Cheney School District, had portions of his art collection displayed throughout the school district maintenance building and Cheney middle and high schools. Schwenn and his collection was set to be featured on Northwest Profiles, a KSPS television show.

Medical Lake City Council approved authorization of an alternate public defender contract that would appoint attorneys to represent indigent defendants in cases of conflict.

April 2, 1998

A small group of theater operators plan to convert the old Savage House Pizzeria building (most recently housing the New Hope Church) into a two-screen cinema that would accommodate about 200 moviegoers.

The D.A.R.E. officer would no longer be available to educate students in the Cheney School District after the school year ended. The city of Cheney funded the position at the cost of about $25,000 a year. The school district contributed $2,300, but because of budget problems, the city can no longer afford to pay the cost of the program.

It appeared the Medical Lake Cardinals boys tennis would again be one of the teams to beat in their league during the season. The Cardinals were coming off a big 5-2 win over Pullman.

March 31, 1988

The intersections of First and D streets would soon be the scene of even more activity as the Cheney Federal Credit Union was about to break ground on its new building. The project was just across D Street from the site where the new library was springing to life.

"Be prepared for protests," one citizen told Air Force officials during a meeting to consider the possible basing of a rail garrison with MX missiles at Fairchild AFB

Don Eggart, who has experienced many more ups than downs during his three years as CHS Lady Hawks basketball team, announced his resignation during the team's annual awards program.

40 Years Ago

March 30, 1978

The Cheney School Board voted unanimously to re-submit the same special levy request that failed by just 10 votes in mid-March.

The Cheney Planning Commission voted 3-2 after much debate to rezone an area on the west end of town to a commercial zone, allowing business and light industry.

Class and poise got the Eastern Washington women's basketball team into the NAIA national tournament in Florence, S.C.

50 Years Ago

March 29, 1968

Plans for a proposed Four Lakes Golf and Country Club were explained at a meeting called for interested Cheney businessmen and representatives from Eastern Washington State College.

Marilyn Lewis and Brian Mickelson received two Outstanding Junior honors at the second annual Masonic Junior Awards dinner.

The Blackhawks baseball team defeated Lacrosse in the season opener for both teams. The pitching of Wayne Just and the hitting of catcher Timm Shepard led the Hawks.
