Cheney baseball, softball open seasons with a combined 6-0

Cheney High School's bat and ball teams kicked off their seasons last week and have yet to taste defeat on their respective diamonds.

The Blackhawks baseball squad notched a pair of road wins, opening the season with a 7-3 win at Quincy on March 13 and followed that with a 13-4 win at Columbia Basin 4A Sunnyside on Saturday. A March 15 hookup at cross-West Plains rival Medical Lake was postponed and has not been rescheduled as of press time.

While the baseball team has yet to play at home, the Lady Blackhawks softball squad followed an 18-1 win in their season opener at 1A Connell on March 13 with a 15-5 home-win over Greater Spokane League 3A's North Central on March 15. Cheney knocked off a Sunnyside,6-5, on March 17, taking a 6-0 lead through the first four innings and holding on as the Grizzlies scored one in the bottom of the fourth and four in the sixth to make things interesting.

Maddie Kallsen, Courtney Hanson and Lindsay Hagreen had two hits a piece to pace Cheney offensively. Kallsen (2-0) pitched a complete game for the win.

Cheney ran its record to 4-0 on Monday with a 12-3 win at Northeast A League Medical Lake. The Lady Blackhawks broke open a close game with three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth, with freshman Shyla Courchaine collecting four hits in the game - three doubles - and going the distance in the pitcher's circle for the win.

Logan Krantz added three hits as Cheney out hit Medical Lake 14-11.

Both teams return to the road this week. Baseball traveled to Central Washington Athletic Conference 2A Ephrata on Tuesday, March 20, and stays out of town with its first Great Northern League contests at Clarkston, March 21, and at East Valley March 27.

The Blackhawks' first home contests are March 31 when GNL foe West Valley comes to the Ballpark in Cheney for a doubleheader.

The Lady Blackhawks travel to NEA Deer Park on March 23 and to Priest River of Idaho's Intermountain League on March 27. Cheney returns home to face CWAC 2A Othello on March 29 before the spring break hiatus.
