Cheney Middle School Future Business Leaders of America students put their teaching and talents to work this past winter to help members of the city of Spokane's homeless community.
Organized by FBLA student Audrey Schlotter, the students completed a community service project by collecting winter clothing items. Working with Blessings Under the Bridge, Schlotter and the chapter spent November and December 2017 collecting and creating 292 items only with money to help the project, getting help from businesses such as Rosa's Pizza and door-to-door contributions from the community.
According to FBLA adviser Leah Silvieus, Schlotter worked the night before the event to cut up fleece she purchased with the donations and created scarves for distribution. On Wednesday, Jan. 31, Schlotter distributed over 150 of her 205 items to homeless individuals at 4th and McClellan in Spokane. The remaining items were donated to Blessings Under the Bridge for a future distribution event.
Schlotter will presen her community service project at the State Business Leadership Conference in April in Bellevue, and will represent the CMS chapter and the work completed.
