Annual Cheney Clean Sweep takes place April 21

The city of Cheney is seeking individual volunteers and groups to help clean up the city in the 11th annual Cheney Clean Sweep. The community-wide cleanup effort takes place Saturday, April 21, beginning at 9 a.m. in Veterans Memorial Park, across from the Wren Pierson Community Center and the fire station.

Each year, residents fan out around the neighborhoods to collect debris lying along streets, open spaces and parks. There are also drop-off station at specific points in the city or residents to bring everything from building materials to hazardous household waste.

Last year, the clean up event collected a total of 10.15 tons of material. Volunteers picked up 2.29 tons of garbage, with residents bringing in 6.59 tons of unused building materials and 1.27 tons of metals to drop-off centers.

The clean up wraps up around noon, with a barbecue scheduled for volunteers afterwards. Volunteers, including local groups, are needed as are sponsors to help with financing the clean up.

Volunteers and sponsors should contact Sue Beeman at sbeemancityofcheney.org or (509) 498-9240 to sign up or for more information.

SCSO training on survivability

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Training Unit is hosting a training opportunity where professors, teachers, students, office staff, retail and healthcare workers and others can learn important information intended to help increase situational awareness, decision making and knowledge in human dynamics (biometrics, kinesics, proxemics). These new tools may help individuals recognize clues and indicators, which could assist in identifying potential problems early, allowing them to be addressed before a critical incident occurs.

This is a four-hour course and the training unit currently has two dates scheduled: March 31 and April 21. The “Situational Awareness – Increase Survivability Course” sessions each day run from 1 – 5 p.m.

The cost for this course is $50 per attendee; however, the first five teachers to email SCSO contact Anthony Anderman at [email protected] will receive free admission.
