Local parks and recreation offers plenty of seasonal options

Spring is just around the corner which means local parks and recreation departments have been busy on the West Plains preparing for the upcoming warm outdoors.

In Airway Heights, the spring programs and events were just released and have activities for everybody offered throughout the season.

The first special event is the Easter Egg Hunt at Sunset Park on March 31 at 9 a.m. There will be age separated egg hunts including preschool and under, kindergarten to first grade, second to third grade and fourth to fifth-grade. There will be a special prize egg in each group along with a visit from the Easter Bunny. The hunt is free, but baskets won’t be provided.

The next event is the Spring Community Clean Up on April 14 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Sunset Park. The city will be accepting trimmed branches less than 2 inches in diameter and less than 6-foot in length, tree leaves, pinecones and needles, grass clippings, thatch and garden vegetation. There will also be a place to accept general household garbage.

Next up is the 5K-9 Fun Run and Walk on May 19. The cost is $20 per participant, which includes a race shirt and a bandana. Dogs are not required to participate, but there is a limit of one dog per person.

Other activities will also be offered throughout spring including a disc golf trip on May 18 from 5:30 -8 8:30 p.m. It will cost $5, which includes food and people have to register by May 16.

At the end of the school year, the department will be hosting a barbeque on June 15 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Sunset Park. It will mark the first movie in the park of the summer as well. It has not been officially announced yet, but there will be another series of motion pictures shown in the park throughout the summer.

For Adults, there is a home gardening class offered on May 2-30 along with a “Spring is Sprung 5K” run club.

Over in Cheney, there are also a variety of options offered for people during the spring and summer seasons. On April 21, the 11th Cheney Clean Sweep will take place from 9 a.m. – noon.

The next special event for the city is the Cheney Wetland Trail Run that takes place on May 12 at 10 a.m. It costs $15 or $25 with a shirt. The same weekend includes Cheney MayFest, taking place on May 11-12. There will be live music, a kid’s zone, vendors, food, shopping, a corn hole tournament, a petting zoo and a car show.

For adults, special courses will be offered in the spring including Photography 101, beginning soap making, Nutrition 101 and a tennis tournament.

It was also announced that Sutton Park will be hosting concerts again this summer on Wednesdays from 6:30 – 8 p.m. It begins on July 11 with the 3D Band, followed by the Mojo Box, Kosta la Vista, Lyle Morse, Jan Harrison, Scattergun and Last Chance for Gas on consecutive Wednesdays.

Movies will also be shown in the park on Fridays at dusk starting July 20, including “Homeward Bound,” “The Music Man,” “Heavyweights,” “My Fair Lady” and the “Muppet Movie.”
