The city of Medical Lake filed a motion in Spokane County Superior Court dismissing A&K Development, Inc.'s lawsuit over the city's refusal to grant a rezone request, citing a "total absence of service."

Roger Hagenbuch, owner of Copy Junction in Cheney, opened another store in Airway Heights at 12015 West 14th Ave.

Cheney Parks and Recreation Department said they are moving forward with getting the development of the 50-acre site on Betz Road underway. The city of Cheney bought the property in the early 1990s and the town hoped to make it into Betz Park.

The Cheney boys basketball team did well both on and off the court this season. The Blackhawks not only finished seventh overall at the Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association 2A state tournament, but they also finished as the state academic team champs.

March 19, 1998

After four long year and many hard learned lessons, Windsor Elementary School finally proved that they could get the Columbian Mammoth declared a Washington state fossil. The kids that started the process, now in the fifth-grade, were in the second-grade originally.

The Eastern Washington State Historical Society at the Cheney Cowles Museum in Spokane had selected two of the six buildings at Eastern Washington University that comprise the EWU Historic District for historic preservation for awards. Showalter Hall Auditorium and lobby received an award of excellence while Sutton Hall earned honorable mention.

The Medical Lake boys basketball team took sixth-place at state in Tacoma.

March 17, 1988

The Cheney Key Tronic plant was spared when the company announced a reduction in its work force, which affected approximately 150 of the more than 2,000 employees in the Spokane area.

Cheney High School's Eric Vines received notification that he had been selected as a Washington Scholar, making him one of 148 graduating seniors from around the state to be honored for academic achievement, leadership abilities and community service.

Tilicum Club's art and hobby show proved to be a success again, with more than 200 attending and 48 exhibitors, marking the largest number of participants in its history.

March 16, 1978

The smoke was finally gong to clear from the Cheney City Council chambers, as council members voted, by a 4-3 margin, to ban tobacco use during meetings.

It wasn't the type of show one would take one's grandmother to, but the National Lampoon Players presentation of "That's Not Funny, That's Sick" at EWU was perfect for a college crowd.

50 Years Ago

March 15, 1968

Pricilla McCarson was named queen of the Medical Lake Community Float at a coronation ceremony. Princesses were Carol Lynam and Candi Perkins.

Cheney Councilman Sam King proposed east-west, one-way couplet predominantly for convince of the school people. His plan would turn Fourth and Fifth streets into one-way roads and is suggested to alleviate crowding on Fifth between C and F streets.

Local shot gunners with the Cheney Gun Club came through with another perfect score to remain tied for the league lead. Hitting 25s were Skip Duty, Chuck Booth, Ivan Calvert and Maurice Robinette.
