Cheney High School business education teacher Adam Smith has been named the school district’s new career and technical education director. Smith has been teaching at Cheney High School since 1998, and will begin his new duties this summer in preparation for the 2018-2019 school year.

While at CHS, Smith has taught over 25 different classes, including a wide range of technology courses, advance placement (AP) courses and classes that allow students to earn credits through Spokane Falls and Spokane community colleges and EWU. He instituted and has served as the adviser to the high school Future Business Leaders of America program which regularly sends members to state and national competitions, including receiving a number of top placements.

Smith also established a Cyber Patriots program to instruct students on cyber defense systems and techniques. He is also an adjunct professor at EWU where he helps support aspiring CTE teachers in their preparation programs.

According to the release, the selection committee was “very impressed with Mr. Smith’s passion for Career and Technical Education, his commitment to inspiring students to pursue their interests and his preparation for the CTE Director role.”

Smith was recently named Outstanding Business Educator by the Western Business Education Association and was honored with award at their annual conference, Feb. 16-19, in Boise, Idaho. According to the WBEA’s website, the awards “is given for contribution to business education through classroom involvement, curriculum development, student organizations, administrative responsibilities and/or publications.”

Smith will continue teaching two classes at CHS in addition to assuming his role as CTE director.
