Cards collect two more big wrestling wins

Medical Lake rips Riverside, tops Cheney, preps for postseason

Medical Lake wrestlers collected two more wins last week, one for the standings in the Northeast A League and the other for bragging rights.

In the NEA match, the Cardinals rallied from an 18-0 hole on Oct. 25 at Senior Night to defeat Riverside 54-21. The win came on the heels of a 40-26 nonleague win at Cheney the night before.

Next up is district competition Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.) at Deer Park with the Cardinals well represented.

"We are taking 25 to districts, we only took 12 last year," head coach Matt Leenhouts wrote in an email. "Things are going in the right direction."

The first-year coach's goals are to get 16 to regionals, Feb. 9-10 at West Valley, and eight to state in Tacoma, Feb. 15-17.

After a slow start in their tangle with Riverside, where the Rams built their early lead off of three pins at 160, 170 and 182 pounds, Medical Lake reeled off 10 consecutive victories. While five of those wins came by forfeit, four were the result of pins.

Chris Hurt-Moran, one of the seniors being honored in their last regular season appearance at home, kicked off the string with a pin at 195 pounds in 3 minutes, 4 seconds over the Rams' Wyatt Mays.

Izaiah Schlosser needed just 1:05 to dismiss Giovanni Bossio at 220 pounds. Following forfeit wins on opposite ends of the weight classes, first by Nick Thompson (285) and Skyler Peterson (106), Jun Figueredo (113) pinned his opponent in 1:06 while Weston Thomas defeated Jonny DesRoches 11-7.

Alex Gonzales scored a 9-1 major decision victory at 126 pounds over Jaedon Betker followed by forfeit wins by Nathan Butcher (132), Evan Peterson (138) and senior Josh Figueredo (145).

The Cards' Brayden Petersen fell in the final bout, 5-3 to Charlie Ewart. It was a similar outcome for Petersen who had the same fate the previous night at Cheney. Petersen lost 5-3 to the Blackhawks' Anthony Aguilera.

Most of the rest of the evening at Cheney, however, had much more favorable outcomes for Medical Lake.

Once again the Cardinals found themselves in a hole with consecutive losses at 170 and 182. But Hurt-Moran (195), Schlosser (220) each won by pins. Colton Ellis (285) won by forfeit with Skyler Peterson (106) and Jun Figueredo (113) each pinning their opponents. Peterson's was quick, just 30 seconds, while Figueredo earned his over a relative eternity in 4:20.

Ethan Davis (132) topped Jackson Showalter 16-2, Josh Figueredo's 4-1 win at 145 and Sam Griffey with an 8-3 victory at 160 closed out the night.
