The Cheney High School gymnastics team placed second with 152.475 points at the Jan. 10 meet in the Mead Gymnastics Center. Central Valley took first place overall with 156.275 points with Ferris, Shadle Park and North Central also competing. After the competition, the Blackhawks were sitting at 7-9 overall.
“The girls had an awesome meet and did a great job making changes we had been working on at practice,” head coach Jamie Frucci said.
Sophia VanWormer was crowned the bar champion for the fourth week in a row with an 8.950. She went on to also win the beam with an 8.900 score. In the vault, she tied for ninth with Cheney’s Kyli Mayhew with a 7.475. On the floor, VanWormer took second place with an 8.750. After all her success, VanWormer took second in the all-around scores with 34.075.
Another highlight for the Blackhawks was Alexis Miller taking third in the all-around with 32.750.
“She beat one of their biggest 3A all-around competitors, Brooklynn Tarr from Shadle Park, who got a 32.400,” Frucci said.
Miller was able to achieve that mark by taking second in the bars with an 8.650. She went on to take fifth in the beam event with an 8.100. She topped off her scoring on the floor by taking fourth and receiving an 8.250.
Other top marks for the Blackhawks included MaKayla Miller taking ninth in the bars with a 7.100 and 10th with a 7.500 on the floor. Laia Vidal took eighth with a 7.750 in the beam event and seventh on the floor with 7.900.
Cheney wrapped up regular season competition on Jan. 17 at Shadle Park High School. Districts will begin on Jan. 26 in the Tri-Cities.
