The Cheney High boys swimming team took two out of three in a double-dual meet with teams from the Central Washington Athletic Conference on Monday, Jan. 8, at the Eastern Washington University pool.
The Blackhawks fell 111-56 to Selah, but knocked off East Valley-Yakima 92-63 and Toppenish 104-41 to run their CWAC/Great Northern League record to 5-3.
Erik Foien led Cheney in individual events scoring, taking first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 56.80 seconds. Foien was second in the 200 free with a time of 2:12.18.
Zack Jongeward brought home second-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyles in 25.29 and 57.16. Matthew Norman was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:13.04 and was third in the 200 individual medley in 2:37.64.
Third-place finishes went to Walker Ross in the 100 backstroke in 1:16.94, and Liam Hewey in the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.08. The Blackhawks 200 freestyle relay team of Steven Freeman, Foien, Norman and Jongeward was second in 1:48.07 while the same line up in the 400 freestyle also finished second in 4:02.61.
Head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said all of the above places were for Cheney’s meet vs. Selah. Against East Valley-Yakima, all of the above individual swimmers posted first-place finishes with the exception of Ross and Hewey, who both finished second.
Against Toppenish, all except Hewey finished first. The 200 and 400 teams were second against East Valley-Yakima and first against Toppenish.
“It was a pretty good meet,” Hochwalt said, adding the swimmers competed a bit tired after returning from the holiday break as well some battling illness.
Two Medical Lake swimmers also competed: Michael Mikolajczyk and Jon Harper.
“Both had huge time drops in the 50 free,” Hochwalt said.
Cheney wraps up its home season today (Jan. 18) against Grandview and Prosser, and concludes the regular season this Saturday with a dual meet at league-leading Pullman. The Blackhawks currently sit third behind Selah and the Greyhounds.
