Since reaching the .500 mark with a Dec. 15 victory at East Valley, the Cheney High boys basketball team has found the win column elusive in its last three games.
The Blackhawks wrapped up 2017 with a 70-44 loss at home to Greater Spokane League Mt. Spokane. The GSL’s 3A classification leaders (3-1, 8-2 overall) hit nine 3-pointers in the game, four by high-scorer Jerry Twenge and three by JT Smith, opening a 35-19 halftime lead and never looking back.
Nicholas Berman led Cheney with 12 points, with Devin Cook adding 11 and Camden VerStrate chipping in 10.
Cheney falls to 3-6 overall, 1-1 in Great Northern League play. The Blackhawks resume GNL action this week, hosting league-leading Pullman (2-0, 8-2) on Wednesday and traveling to third-place Clarkston (2-1, 4-4) Friday.
Pullman is currently 13th in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s 2A RPI standings, while Clarkston is 41st. Cheney is ranked 25th in standings that are produced through a formula including winning percentage, opponents winning percentage, opponents/opponents winning percentage and strength of schedule.
